Bioexcellence  is working in various areas to promote biotechnology education and research. The ultimate goal is creating opportunities for biotechnologists in industry, academia and research. In an attempt to achieve these goals, BI has started following activities. 

Educational Awareness

Biotechnology Educational Awareness Initiative, is a nationwide movement to raise awareness in students pursuing or planning to pursue education in the field of biotechnology. Initial events are planned to be organized in Pune and Nashik in the first week of  August. The concept has received good response and talks are underway with different NGOs to organize the event in Hyderabad, Hubali, Mumbai and Chandigarh. More can be read about the the event here

Promotion of Biotechnology Research from Indian Perspective

Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, has identified key application areas in biotechnology research. BI has aligned its objectives to raise awareness and undertake research and development activities in these areas .The goal of this activity is to bring insight in students, doctoral candidates, researchers and entrepreneurs about the research areas in biotechnology important form the Indian perspective. Expected outcome of this activity is to bring change in rational thinking about biotechnology development in India and promote students to undertake research and entrepreneurial activities in the identified areas.
 
Agricultural Biotechnology : Generation of improved crop varieties through transgenic technology, Establishment of plant molecular markers, Development of DNA based diagnostics of pests and pathogens of crops, In vitro cultivation of plants.

Biotechnology Developments in Plant Bioresources :Characterization of pool of genes for temperature, drought, salinity tolerance, Characterization of complex genetic and molecular mechanisms of gene products (therapeutic compounds, dyes, essential oils, biocontrol agents, gums, resins), In vitro methods for cultivation of ornamental plants, Value addition to ayurveda, siddha, unani, tribal and folk medicines

Biotechnology Developments in Microbial Bioresources :Cultural and molecular characterization of microorganisms, Exploration of microbial flora in the north eastern region and extreme habitat, Database preparation of microbial flora in India.

Biotechnology Developments in Marine Bioresources :Cultivation of marine organisms, Molecular characterization, Exploitation of novel genes and gene products e.g. biopolymers, novel enzymes and new therapeutic leads, IPR Protection 

Preventive and Therapeutic Medical Biotechnology : Major Concern Areas HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, Respiratory Infections, Neuropsychiatric Diseases, Diabetes and Cancer
Pathogen Genomes and Subtypes, Host Pathogen Interaction, Host Responses to Infectious Challenges, Molecular Determinants of Virulence and Protective Immunity, Development of New Drugs, Study of Antibiotic Resistance Pattern, Development of Vaccines

Bioinformatics and IT Enabled Biotechnology : Integration of molecular databases

Industrial Biotechnology : Recombinant DNA technology, large scale production of biotechnology derived products, process scale up and optimization, vaccine research

Promotion of Biotechnology Products

Biotechnology derived products are slowly coming to both international and domestic markets. Bioexcellence  is committed to inform about the latest developments in commercialization of biotechnology products in all parts of society. Major emphasis will be on research and development activities of domestic biotechnology industry and BI will work to raise awareness about the use of biotechnology derived products. Ayurveda, siddha, unani, tribal and folk medicines are on top agenda of BI.

Scholarships for Higher Education

Bioexcellence  Research Scholarship Scheme provides students with financial assistance for pursuing M.Sc, M.Tech and PhD studies in top Indian universities and research institutions. The scholarships will be awarded from the academic session 2010-11.

Workshops, Seminars and conferences are organized throughout the year. 

Summer Projects and Dissertations

Bioexcellence  helps graduate and postgraduate students for summer training and dissertation placement. A few scientists from national institutes and industries have agreed to accommodate B.Sc and M.Sc students recommended by Bioexcellence . We are trying to network with more and more organizations where students can complete project work.
